Kingswood TAFE

The Kingswood Institute of Applied Technology Construction (IATC), a TAFE NSW campus located near Penrith in Sydney’s western suburbs, is dedicated to training the next generation of construction industry professionals. To support this mission, the institute developed a new facility designed to provide a modern, industrial environment where apprentices could hone their practical skills. Network Architectural was brought on board to create a bespoke ceiling system that would align with both the building’s functional needs and its aesthetic vision.

In collaboration with Kingswood Institute of Applied Technology and Dunrite Linings, Network Architectural delivered a custom metal mesh ceiling system. Although durlum ceilings were not originally specified, their shorter lead times and flexibility made them the ideal choice as the project progressed.

Dunrite Linings installed expanded metal mesh panels from durlum throughout the facility. Black, Blue and Grey expanded metal mesh were used in classrooms and meeting rooms to create intimate, focused spaces, while lighter grey tones were selected for public areas to enhance openness. For the corridors, durlum S1 Clip-In tiles were installed to achieve precise, linear ceilings in lower-height spaces.

In the practical training rooms, vibrant yellow powder-coated expanded metal mesh panels were used to energise the environment. To enhance durability and functionality, durlum’s opaque acrylic backing panels were added to prevent vermin and debris from penetrating the ceiling system whilst still allowing natural light to penetrate through the ceiling. Externally, durlum S7 double hook-on service panels were installed around the building soffit, ensuring a seamless transition between bays and contributing to the building’s cohesive industrial aesthetic.

This project resulted in a visually striking and highly functional space that meets the needs of both students and staff at the Kingswood Institute.
